SOOHYEOK SHIN
'Remembering Space'

September 16 - October 15, 2020

Since 2016 Soohyeok Shin’s work is completed by using oil paints on canvas laying and erasing both horizontal and vertical lines. The lines abstractly express his memories, the boundaries between daily and non-daily, and various phenomenon that repeats in between. In Shin’s work, ‘blue’ becomes a medium that reveals his memories and establishes his identity as an artist. He explores the infiniteness of blue color by varying the concentration of paint according to light. Depending on its shades and thickness it may represent dreamy and transcendent feelings.

His main motif was the unfamiliarity that comes from new environment, the sceneries in Korea is changing rapidly due to industrialization movement. Modernization came with buildings being destructed and constructed repeatedly. From this observation, Shin realized how new memories can be piled up on another, which resembles the way he paints his painting. He hopes the audience to feel the texture of his brush, his touch, his movement before the canvas, and the density of paint through his work.

Although his works were completed with his touch of repetitive brushworks, the texture of each lines is expressed differently. We feel and see his movement in front of the canvas through the continuation and break of short lines. Shin wants to view the world through the nature of painting and express the world he sees through his work. Shin enables our intangible memories to become visual from the tips of his paint brush. We hope the viewer can face a new world of their own memories and space through his work.
